KMF electric kit car challenge for students

Build Day

KMF worked with Greenpower Education Trust to use the excitement of Motorsport to develop STEM skills in students and encourage them into a career in engineering.

The project challenged teams of year 10 students to design, build and race an electric kit car, is part of KMF's annual 'Young Engineer of the Year' (YEOTY) competition.

KMF has worked with Greenpower previously on the 2014 edition of their YEOTY competition. However, the 2018 project saw the addition of a filmmaking feature as students were challenged to capture their YEOTY journey with GoPro cameras and produce a short film that documented the highlights of their build.

The project began with a Build Day at Staffordshire University where all of the 24 participating high schools received their kit car equipment and met their sponsor organisations.

KMF invited other local companies to benefit from the rewards of working closely with schools and are found each a sponsor to offer both financial and resource support.

New sponsor organisations for 2018 included Patera Engineering, Cobra Biologics and Capula.

The campaign concluded with an awards ceremony at King's Hall in Staffordshire hosted by Jason Bradbury, best known for his time on Channel 5's The Gadget Show.

One of the primary drivers of this campaign was to promote the career opportunities for young people.

Over many years, KMF's Young Engineer Competition has reached more than 19,000 students, worked with over 55 sponsor organisations and invested over £550,000 in the encouragement of students into STEM subjects.

Jenny Conlon, KMF's Training Centre Manager, commented, "The positive feedback received from students, teachers and MPs, continues to highlight the real need for projects like this to bridge the gap between schools and industry. We will continue to run this campaign on an annual basis. However, we will change the theme to keep students engaged and inspired. I have a feeling 2018 will be the best year yet."
